Computer Woes

Moving to a new place means reconfiguring all of your devices. I had a 2U Supermicro server that I was keeping at my mother-in-law's place while we were moving, but I've since bought a custom-built mini NAS that I migrated everything over to. Moving everything over was fairly painless, outside of one of my VMs needing to be restored from a few-months-old backup and getting it up-to-date. The real pain has been in configuring my home network.

I've been wrestling with an Eero router that was set up by our ISP. It has some pretty nonsensical default configurations (Default subnet mask is 255.255.0.0!) and doesn't give a whole lot of options for changing things, and the options you do have are pretty locked down. The plan is to get a OpenWRT/OPNSense VM set up on my Proxmox installation and set up the Eero in bridge mode so that I don't have to deal with its nonsense.

My big fear is that, if something goes wrong with my home server, then my entire network goes down too. However, the only other person I live with is my fiancee, so I might be able to get away with it for a little bit. Ideally, I'd like to have a dedicated PC just for routing.

Beyond networking problems, I have to restore about 3 months of torrent activity to ensure I don't get any hit-and-run warnings. Hopefully it should be as easy as imported my backup of .torrent files.

For now, I've got my server back in a usable state. I'll need to be more much frugal with resources, since I'm going from 12 cores and 32GB RAM to a measly four cores and 8GB RAM. A RAM upgrade is for sure in order, but I'm hoping that I won't have to upgrade the CPU for a while. Jellyfin is configured to avoid transcoding whenever possible, so this shouldn't be an issue.

Vibe Coding? In My Password Manager?

In other news, KeepassXC is allowing generative AI code submissions, albeit with strict review guidelines. The thought of any generative AI code being used in my password manager makes me pretty uneasy, so it might be time to jump to Bitwarden. This was one of the options I was initially considering, but I really liked the one-file system of Keepass. At the end of the day, it might not be that big of a jump since KeepassXC still required Syncthing to be set up to have passwords available on all devices. I am a bit worried about offline access though. I'll need to do more research on Bitwarden before making the jump.

The Ever-Elastic Dollar

We're tight on funds for the next two weeks, so it's time to dive into some cookbooks to get some high-yield recipes. My fiancee works really long shifts and often does not have time for full meals outside of her lunch, so I'm trying to put together more "snack-y" foods. I made some granola yesterday that sat in the oven for just a bit too long; we had a gas stove at our old place, so I'm still trying to get used to our electric stove that we have here.

I think baked goods are the best bang-for-your-buck option, especially if you incorporate veggies or meats in with them. They're especially good for on-the-go all-in-one quick-fix meals, like sausage croissants or spinach and feta turnovers. I feel that learning to make snacks as opposed to full meals means I'll need a lot more baking supplies!
